What You Really Pay

Many providers advertise a low starting price and add the resident agent, fees and certificates later. Here is what the 10–24 m lifetime registration of €2,390 (valid until 2050, 5 years of registered agent included) is made of:

ItemPaid toAmount
Lifetime registration, valid until 2050San Marino Ship Register€990
Safety certificateSan Marino Ship Register€500
Radio licence with call sign and MMSISan Marino Ship Register€200
Local agent fee (first 5 years)San Marino resident agent€500
Vessel Flag serviceVessel Flag€200
Total€2,390

The 1-year option is €990 to the registry (safety certificate, radio licence and deletion certificate included) plus our €200 service and €100 for the resident agent: €1,290 in the first year. Provisional certificates are valid for 3 months; extensions cost €150 each, and surveyor fees for commercial yachts are not included. Registry fees follow the San Marino Ship Register price list 2026 and are paid once the file is complete.

After the First 5 Years

The lifetime registration is valid until 2050 and has no registry renewal. The first 5 years of registered agent fee are already included; after that you only pay the registered agent fee of €100 a year. A 1-year registration is renewed every year on its anniversary.

  • Lifetime registration valid until 2050 (registered agent included for 5 years, then €100 a year), or a 1-year registration
  • Provisional certificate valid 3 months, typically issued within days of payment and a complete file (not guaranteed); permanent certificate within 3 months
  • No survey for pleasure yachts under 24 m (self-assessment); yachts 15 years and older are assessed case by case and may need an inspection
  • Bareboat charter to a private person up to 84 days a year on a pleasure registration; no crew or paying guests
  • Foreign owners need a San Marino resident agent
  • IMO member since 2002; San Marino is not an EU flag, and the flag does not by itself change EU VAT status
  • Documents in English or Italian; fully online, no originals by courier

Surveys and Inspections

Pleasure yachts under 24 m do not need a physical survey: the owner completes a self-assessment (form SA-04-SYSC). The self-assessment is possible only for pleasure registration. Older yachts: San Marino generally does not accept vessels of 15 years and older without a pre-registration inspection; for yachts under 500 GT this is decided case by case.

Commercial yachts below 24 m need inspection reports under the San Marino Small Yacht Safety Code and MLC 2006, by an authorised surveyor or recognised organisation. The registry price list shows a package of €2,100 (registration €900 valid for life, annual tonnage fees €500 and radio licence €200 for years 1–5, safety certificate €500; surveyor fees excluded). Commercial yachts of 24 m and over need a San Marino recognised organisation, a Load Line certificate and a tonnage certificate: first-year package €6,350 then €2,700 a year, or registration valid for life €2,650 (up to 500 GT) or €3,200 (above 500 GT) plus annual fees. For private yachts of 24 m and over we quote on request. Officers on commercial yachts need valid certificates of competence with San Marino endorsements.

More San Marino Questions

For pleasure yachts of 10–24 m the price is €2,390 for a lifetime registration valid until 2050, including 5 years of registered agent fee (registry fee €990, safety certificate €500, radio licence €200, local agent for the first 5 years €500, our service €200) and €1,290 for the first year of a 1-year registration (registry €990, our service €200, resident agent €100). Commercial and larger yachts follow the registry’s commercial price list; private yachts of 24 m and over are quoted on request.

No. The lifetime registration is valid until 2050 and includes the registered agent fee for the first 5 years. After 5 years you only pay the registered agent fee of €100 a year. A 1-year registration is renewed every year on its anniversary.

Yes. The registry publishes no nationality list, and owners of any nationality can register, subject to its due diligence on the beneficial owners. Owners who do not live in San Marino need a San Marino resident agent (Form 02), which we provide.

On a pleasure registration you may bareboat charter to a private person for up to 84 days a year. Charter with crew and paying guests is not allowed, not even occasionally; that needs a commercial registration with inspection reports and the commercial safety and MLC 2006 requirements.

The San Marino registry states that moving a yacht to its flag does not, in itself, lead to the loss of the yacht’s EU VAT status, provided the EU customs conditions are met (for example the yacht is not exported from the EU customs territory, or is re-imported within three years). We cannot promise a VAT result for your case; check it with us before you act.

No. San Marino is not an EU member. It is an IMO member since 2002.

Yes. You need the deletion certificate from the previous registry, or an application for deletion plus a non-encumbrance (open transcript) certificate. A yacht that is still flagged elsewhere cannot receive a provisional San Marino certificate without one of these.

Certificates are issued electronically by the registry; no paper copies are posted. Keep the certificates available on board, printed or digital, as the authorities of the port or country may ask for them.

The registry assesses age case by case. Vessels of 15 years and older are generally not accepted without a pre-registration inspection, and alternatives for yachts under 500 GT are evaluated individually. Tell us the year of build before you start.

After payment and a complete file the provisional certificate typically arrives within days; in our files it took from about 10 hours to 6 days. This is not guaranteed. The provisional certificate is valid for 3 months, and the permanent certificate follows within 3 months of it.

Pleasure yachts under 24 m use a self-assessment (form SA-04-SYSC) instead of a survey. Commercial yachts and yachts of 24 m and over need inspection reports by an authorised surveyor or a San Marino recognised organisation.

1. Fill in the registration form and send us the documents. 2. We check them, prepare the power of attorney and the resident agent appointment, and send the application to the registry. 3. After payment you receive the provisional certificate by email. 4. The registry issues the permanent certificate and the radio licence (call sign and MMSI).

No. Vessel Flag is a private consultancy, not a registry or government authority. We prepare and submit your application to the San Marino Ship Register, which issues the registration and the certificates.

Quick Provisional Registration

The provisional certificate typically arrives within days of payment and a complete file. This is not guaranteed. The permanent certificate follows within 3 months.

Bareboat Charter Allowed

On a pleasure registration you may bareboat charter to a private person for up to 84 days a year. No crew or paying guests.

Choose Your Use

San Marino has been an IMO member since 2002. It is not an EU flag, and the flag does not by itself change your EU VAT status.

No Survey Under 24 m
